The situation in Sri Lanka would not have reached a grave stage in the non-liberated areas had the LTTE terrorists utilized the 48-hour window period given by the government to allow civilians to move to safer areas," Indian Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram was quoted as saying on Sunday(Feb 15).
He had made these remarks during a public meeting held at Mylapore, Chennai in the South Indian state. He also pointed-out that, "India cannot directly interfere in the war against the LTTE, as demanded by some, since the country had itself not held talks with militant outfits in the North-East and Kashmir, who had refused to give up arms".
"Before any possible dialogue for cession of hostilities the LTTE should give-up arms", Minister Chidambaram further asserted.
"This fact has been understood only by the DMK, Congress and AIADMK in the state," he said, adding that PMK leader Dr S Ramadoss and Viduthulai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Tol Tirumavalavan (pro-LTTE parties) should also try to see this viewpoint.
